\nWASHINGTON:<\/strong>An internal investigation by the CIA has found that agency officials engaged in a cover-up to hide negligence in the downing in Peru of a private aircraft suspected of carrying illegal narcotics.<\/p>\n Excerpts of an internal CIA report released on Thursday accused agency officials of lying to Congress and withholding critical information from criminal investigators and senior Bush Administration officials.<\/p>\n The disclosure could lead to the reopening of a probe into whether CIA officials committed crimes in the 2001 attack on the aircraft, which was transporting American missionaries, and then covered it up. Peter Hoekstra, a Republican in the House intelligence committee, described the revelations as “a dark stain” on the CIA and called for information to be shared with the Justice Department to determine whether a new probe was warranted.<\/p>\n “To say these deaths did not have to happen is more than an understatement,” Mr Hoekstra said.<\/p>\n He added that the CIA’s inspector-general had uncovered “continuous efforts to cover the matter up and block criminal investigation”.<\/p>\n The report concludes that CIA officials repeatedly violated rules of engagement that were designed to prevent potentially fatal mishaps in the drug-interdiction program, which was launched by the US in 1994.<\/p>\n The aircraft was owned by a US Baptist mission organisation and was on a flight from Brazil.<\/p>\n Los Angeles Times\n<\/p>\n CIA lied over attack on plane November 22, 2008 WASHINGTON:An internal investigation by the CIA has found that agency officials engaged in a cover-up to hide negligence in the downing in Peru of a private aircraft suspected of carrying illegal narcotics. \nThe attack, which was carried out by a Peruvian aircraft working with CIA surveillance craft, led to the deaths of Veronica Bowers and her infant daughter as well as injuries to three others, including Mrs Bowers’s husband and son.<\/p>\n
