\nSoft drink manufacturer Coca Cola has hit back at claims that its Fanta range contains pesticides at up to 300 times the level found in bottled or tap water.<\/strong><\/p>\n The multinational said the “minuscule” amounts of the chemicals were well within accepted limits and the orange and lemon products were safe to drink.<\/p>\n Researchers in Spain tested 102 cans and bottles of fizzy drink bought from 15 countries for the presence of pesticides. The study found that the levels were well below the maximum allowed for fruit, but up to 300 times the levels found in bottled or tap water.<\/p>\n The University of Jaen study team called on the Government, the soft drinks industry and the company to remove the chemicals – which are mainly applied to fruit to stop it developing fungal infections and rotting. \nIt found that the drinks bought in the UK, in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Gatwick Airport, contained the highest levels of pesticides.<\/p>\n
