Cappadonna was always a distant, unofficial member of the Wu, and not because of his skill as a rapper, but more because he struggled to figure out the world in those times, mostly how to stay out of the hands of the law and other negativities that come with street. He released a gold album in 1998 called “The Pillage” to suggest he’s free and here to take back everything owed to him in rap while incarcerated, willingly or having to use violence. Of course not literally, but in hip hop, especially in those times, MCs used certain words and imagery to suggest being the toughest on the mic and against all powers that intend to bound them with rules and lines to color within. U-God also of Wu Tang credits him being in Wu Tang was because of Cappadonna inviting him to meet the RZA and other members. Cap himself, as we’ll refer to him from here on out, is most noted for loose verses he guests appears on, like Raekwon’s 1995 single “Ice Cream”, Wu Tang’s 1997 single “Triumph” and appearances on the group “W” album as an official member. While he did pen highly regarded verses and is seen as an official Wu Tang member by the other members of the clan, Cap’s life has been almost a contrast to most of theirs. Things like he was homeless for about 8 months, some say by choice, and others because he was kicked out the house by his wife, who also happened to be his manager. He claims it was to cleanse his life of the love for worldly things, mainly by the people around him. In this time he also drove an illegal $10 cab in Baltimore, that he says made him one with the people. He was talented, had opportunity, and a gold album to kick start his career, but never grew into the artist his potential wanted him to and became the forgotten member of the WU as time goes on.
